Take a good, long hard look at the current generation Audi RS4. It’s not very pretty, is it?! Yet I think we should learn to love it as-is, because it’s probably the last naturally aspirated RS model Audi ever makes.
Just like the RS6 downsized and dropped a couple of cylinders, so too will the next-gen RS4. A report from Car & Driver magazine cites secretive sources inside the German automaker as saying that the RS4 will have a twin-turbo V6 instead of the current 450 PS V6 engine.
Our say is that either a 3.0-liter or a 3.6-liter block is possible, since Porsche has developed both for the Macan. Looking back at the old 2.7-liter RS4 from decades ago, this doesn’t sound completely unfathomable.
Of course, the next RS4 will be faster, but lots of us Audi fans are going to miss the screaming sound of the 4.2-liter, which revs to over 8,000rpm. You just don’t get the same feeling with the V6-powered S4! The change will likely also influence the next RS5, but according to C&D, a debut of either of these cars is still a long way off.
Editor’s note: I do not like the wagon. Can we have the sedan back please!
