It's no secret that vintage cars and Zenith timepieces are a match made in heaven. Following the same retro look and pattern, the Swiss luxury watchmaker brought back the original design of its A3817 with a new edition in the Revival collection, the Chronomaster Revival A3817.
The A3817, which was introduced in 1971, was a mix of the sportier steel tonneau-shaped case of the earliest steel El Primero references with the tri-color dial of the A386. The result was a stylish vintage look that is still sought-after today by chronograph enthusiasts.
This new piece takes after the style and dimensions of the original model, having a 37 mm diameter steel case with pump-style pushers. Its details were designed using historical blueprints and reverse engineering, so the watch represents a replica of its" ancestor."
Chronomaster Revival A3817 features a white retro-style lacquered dial with blue and gray counters. Its running seconds counter at 9 o'clock is done with blue markers, indicated by the single blue hand on the dial. On the other part, there' a tachymeter which also serves as a pulsometer.
Powered by in-house El Primero automatic movement, the heart of this timepiece beats at 36.000 vibrations per hour (vph) and can provide a 50-hour power reserve. In addition, its seconds indicating track is done in a pyramid pattern dubbed the "shark tooth" scale, which improves legibility while adding a retro feeling. For a sporty look, the hands and markers were coated with beige Super-LumiNova.
One of the few differences that sets it apart from the original is the open case back that reveals a blue column wheel and an open rotor marked with the Zenith star logo. The El Primero high-frequency caliber can also be seen through the open display.
Zenith paired the timepiece with a matching stainless steel "ladder" bracelet with a branded folding clasp to complete the whole look. As the Swiss watchmaker puts it, it's a modern reinterpretation of the Gay Freres bracelets. Another option offered is a brown calfskin leather strap with a steel pin buckle.
According to Dupont Registry, the Chronomaster Revival A3817 is currently available through an authorized retailer for the price of $8,400.
