During the New York Auto Show, Volkswagen revealed 4 brand new concepts based on the Beetle that are basically just future special editions. Sales haven't been going their way, and it seems the German manufacturer wants to drum up some interest. However, a small note in the official press release has caught our attention, as it says production of the Beetle Dune will start in 2016.
The Beetle Dune was originally shown as a concept car at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, where it received excellent reviews. Inspired by offroad racing, which the Beetle did plenty of during its RWD era, this new model is like an Alltrack.

The Dune packaging includes things like chrome-plated skid plate for the front and rear, big 19-inch alloy wheels with grippy rubber and a raised suspension system.

Power for the concept came from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 210 hp and was delivered through a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. For better grip, an XDS differential was also installed.

As for the other 4 concept cars, they hopefully preview something VW wants to put into production.

First up is the Beetle Denim Edition, which boasts "Stonewashed Blue Metallic" paint. It's a convertible model with a denim-inspired dark blue roof, but everybody knows you're not supposed to mix two kinds of jeans. Secondly, there's the Beetle Convertible Wave that features a Habanero Orange Metallic paintjob, chrome mirror caps like a Golf R and 19-inch Tornado wheels.

Our favorite is the Beetle Pink Color Edition, which has the R-line body kit and isn't actually pink, more of a dark purple that you wouldn't call girly. The last one is the Beetle R-Line Concept, which is also quite cool, featuring an aggressive collage of spoilers, wings and intakes. It's not bad, but we already have an R-Line kit, so why make another one?
