Just a month after being shown in Geneva, the Infiniti QX30 Concept is making its US debut at the New York Auto Show. This is a preview for a brand new type of SUV from the luxury automaker, one built for a crowded city like the Big Apple.

The neat thing about it is that it's as new as baby chickens, unlike the QX50 they also showed in New York, which is just a minor refresh. It's also about as small as a hatchback, perfect for carving through traffic.

The QX30 was signed around the same platform as the Mercedes GLA. We all know how well that is selling in America right now, but the German design can be a little dull. That's where the baby Infiniti comes in, bringing aggressive lines we've seen on the Q50 sedan and combining them with German tech.

"The QX30 Concept looks as capable as it is meant to be," said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director. "The artistic touches we put in lift the crossover to another level from being just another utility vehicle."

You may think that this is a Japanse car, maybe based on the Nissan Rogue, but the QX30 is actually engineered by Mercedes-Benz in Europe and we believe it's powered by the same 2-liter turbo engine used the GLA and CLA. With 200 horsepower or there about, this will be a great match for the Audi Q3, especially when AWD will be fitted as standard.

Production of the QX30 is going to start in Britain at the same factory that currently only makes European Nissans. But Nissan and Daimler have already signed and agreed to build a factory together in North America, where all the premium compacts are going to be made. That should help Nissan keep its premium model around $33,000.
