Volvo took the world by storm with the all-new XC90 sports utility vehicle, but the Swedish automaker isn't going to stop at that. Some new models are in the pipeline as well, but until they come on the scene, Volvo kitted the XC90 with sporty R-Design clothes.
Aimed at customers that are looking for that type of vehicle that can turn heads, the release of the R-Design visual package follows the automaker's release of the XC90 First Edition. Only 1,927 cars were available for order, but the batch sold out in just 47 hours. Priced from $65,900 in the United States, the Volvo XC90 First Edition comes only in T6 guise and it's loaded with all sorts of goodies.

Compared to the XC90 T6 First Edition, the new Volvo XC90 R-Design is available with a broader choice of Drive-E four-pot powertrains, including the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant with its 400 horsepower total output. Alain Visser, senior VP of marketing, sales and customer service at Volvo, declared: “R-Design is created for people with a passion for things that add spice to life. It appeals to customers that love active driving and a personal, expressive design."

Though it doesn't have a price tag yet, the XC90's R-Design won't come cheap considering just how many visual updates are in store with it. Highlights include two types of 20-inch R-Design alloy rims, blacked out front grille and lip spoiler, silk metal window surrounds, integrated silver roof rails and integrated dual exhausts, as well as matte silver side mirror covers. But that's not the end of the list.

On the inside, the R-Design package adds special details on the gearshift paddles, gearshift knob, steering wheel and Contour sports seats, as well as sportier pedals, unique floor mats and groovy illuminated tread plates. Even the ignition key is getting R-Design detailing. Last but not least, the R-Design touch comes with a unique theme for the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Volvo also announced that it has adopted a new trim level strategy. The old XC90's top level trims have been replaced by the XC90 Inscription, an elegant and richly equipped specification, and the sporty XC90 R-Design, while the core of the range comes in the form of the Volvo XC90 Momentum.
