Set to be unveiled “in the coming weeks,” the 2018 Volvo XC40 will be the first application of the Compact Modular Architecture. It’s an important model for the Swedish manufacturer, and in essence, the smallest Volvo SUV to date.
There’s a chance the XC40 will be followed by the XC20 in a few years’ time, but let’s focus on what’s cooking right now. A month since the last teaser, the present one focuses on the practicality of the newcomer. Here’s the line that will make jaw drops: “Volvo created enough storage in the door compartment for a laptop and a tablet, or a couple of water bottles.” Brilliant? You bet it is!

I admit I’m not in the target demographic Volvo is eyeing with the XC40, but as an auto journo, I’m all too aware how rare it is for a modern car to be designed with genuinely useful storage space in the door cards. And believe it or not, this is just one of the many aces hiding under the sleeve of the XC40.

Here’s Louiza Atcheba, brand manager for the 40 Series, offering more information on the compact SUV’s interior versatility: “Phones slide around in the mid-console, takeaway bags are at constant risk of falling over and people fumble behind the wheel as they try to get service cards out of their wallets. We set out to solve these and many other issues we encountered.” Can you imagine it? A place for putting your mobile device without it sliding around?

As if these details weren’t enough to spur interest in how the XC40 cabin actually looks like, Volvo offers additional information on the subject. More specifically, the XC90- and XC60-inspired dashboard, complete with a tablet-like infotainment system, offers slots for credit and service cards. The tunnel console under the central armrest, meanwhile, has enough room for a tissue box. And last, but certainly not least, a removable trash bin is also present.

Speaking of the interior, here it is in pre-production form.
