Wagons/estates have become about as obscure as the dark side of the moon. However, Swedish carmaker Volvo developed a stunning new V60 despite making so much more money with its SUVs, such as the XC60 and XC90.
The first reviews are in, and they say pretty much what we already knew from the start: that the 2019 Volvo V60 is fantastically well designed, refined and available with more technology than its predecessor. However, it can also be much more expensive to buy.
This second-generation model is built on top of the common Volvo modular platform. However, that doesn't mean all its engines are the same. The big highlight is that they make two plug-in hybrids, not just one. However, Carbuyer recommends a more mainstream version, the V60 D4.
In the XC90, this 190 HP 2-liter diesel can seem a little rough. But the V60 does a better job with the NVH levels. While very stable in the corners, this wagon is not for those looking for thrills. Its steering is soft, as this is more of a refined long-distance cruiser.
The least powerful engine is the 150 HP D3. But you can get similar fuel consumption from the 180 HP T4 mode. Only T6 (310 HP) and above gets AWD. What's more potent than a T6? Only the 341 HP and 391 HP hybrid models we mentioned.
Unlike the bigger V90, cargo capacity has also gone up in the V60. At 530 liters, it's still a Volvo you can buy purely because you need the space. Convenience features also include flat-folding seats which can be operated from the trunk and a clever divider.
Volvo's minimalist approach to design continues inside, where the new V60 sports a big infotainment screen, digital dashboard and cleanly laid out cabin. Even though Volvo has other trim, this all-black look looks classy and timeless.
