A couple of years ago, there was a rumor that suggested Volkswagen will kill off every non-profitable cars, including most of the coupes and some MPV. That clearly hasn't happened and the facelift the Scirocco received last year pretty much secures its future into the next generation of production. What will that look like? Check out the following renderings.
The 2015 Passat has pretty much previewed a new design philosophy for Volkswagen. Wide-set headlights connected by a chrome grille and precisely defined taillight graphics show the more technologically advanced nature of the German volume brand which now wants to challenge Mercedes and BMW in some segments. We've already seen it on the 2016 Touran and their new 5 and 7-seat SUVs will feature it as well.0

The next Scirocco probably won't be ready until 2017, but when that day finally comes, the MQB platform used by the Golf will help it shed as much as a 100 kilos (220 lbs). A more grown up approach to design will also be seen, as all signs point toward the Scirocco becoming a serious performance car, not just a pretty face.

These renderings were created by X-Tomi Design, who took all the elements he could from the Passat and virtually "glued" them to Scirocco. We think the overall effect is a big improvement, especially the larger trapezoidal exhausts which no enthusiastic VW fun would ever say no to.

It's hard not to get excited about the potential future engine range. Just imagine what a lighter 'Rocco could do with the 230 hp, 350 Nm 2-liter turbo used by the Golf GTI, complete with its electronically controlled limited slip differential. Of how about a 310 horsepower, AWD coupe that can challenge the BMW M135i.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
