Designed for people who want to take longer journeys with their family, the California is fitted with a removable picnic table and folding chairs. It also has a massive pop-top tent and blinds to keep the passengers from getting sunburned.

So what's different on the outside? Well, the California has more distinctive headlights equipped with LEDs. The bumper and grille also vaguely resemble those of a Passat B8.

Inside, we see a steering wheel borrowed from the Golf and superior trim for the dashboard. Its new infotainment system has better connectivity options and is also easier to use. If you've ever wanted to take the kitchen with you on the road, know that the California has that feature. A functional kitchenette is equipped with two stoves and a sink. They are trimmed in White Wood in the new California Coast and Dark Wood in the new California Ocean.

It's amusing that this van is named after a market that it has abandoned. However, the features that made the '04 Eurovan different are still thre.

Not surprisingly, the engines are all shared with the T6. Volkswagen offers a full range of TDI diesels with outputs ranging from 84 PS all the way to 204 PS. There will also be petrol models available, all turbocharged and packing from 149 to 204 PS. All engines. All of them meet the Euro 6 emission standards and equipped as standard with BlueMotion Technology with engine start-stop.

These features have helped reduce fuel consumption by an average of 15% compared to the previous generation while CO2 emissions start from a low 164 grams per kilometer.

The model is already available for order in Germany, with prices starting at €41,429. The Volkswagen California was introduced in 1988. The first generation was based on the T3 and sold 22,000 units. Its successor was the T4 version of which 39,000 were built. The outgoing model was the most successful, as 50,000 California T5 models were sold.
