New Toyota Yaris 5-Star Euro NCAP Rating Announced

The latest test conducted by Euro NCAP have been revealed, and the new Toyota Yaris hatchback received a five-star rating. However, we’ll have to delve a bit deeper to see if it’s all that safe.
First off, the compact hatchback got 89 percent for its adult occupant protection, but that score doesn’t tell the whole story. Maximum points were awarded for protection of the driver dummy in the frontal impact, but in case of a side collision, the curtain airbag became slightly trapped behind the trim of the windscreen pillar, and the head scores for both the side barrier and side pole tests were penalised. Looks like Toyota will have to go back to the drawing board on this one.

Rib damage could be sustained in case of a side impact with a pole, and whiplash protection wasn’t that good in case o rear impact.

“In the frontal impact, movement of the 3 year dummy, sat in a forward facing restraint, was not excessive. In the side impact, both dummies were properly contained by the shells of their restraints. The passenger airbag can be disabled by means of a switch to allow a rearward facing restraint to be used in that seating position. Clear information is provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag and the system was rewarded. The dangers of using a rearward facing seat in the position without first disabling the airbag are explained in permanently attached labels,” Euro NCAP says.

As is usually the case with the bumper tests, pedestrian protection for the legs was good, but the front edge of the bonnet was to hard and only 0.1 points were scored for pelvis protection of pedestrians that are struck by the Yaris.
