New Toyota GT 86 Rally Car Making WRC Debut Next Month

Probably nothing and that’s why Toyota’s new GT 86 rally car is going to make its debut next month on the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, the ninth round of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship.

Known as the GT 86 CS-R3, the rally car has been under development for the past year and it’s now time to be put through its paces as the official “pathfinder” zero car. Which means that it will not compete against anyone, but it will be driven through each stage as a safety test before everyone else.

Toyota Motorsport (TMG) concentrated on reducing the car’s weight while still keeping it safe and reliable. The two-liter flat-four engine got new software, cams and compression ratio, so it will be good of 240 - 250 bhp, which will be sent to the rear wheels via a sequential six-speed gearbox and a limited-slip diff.

Rally teams will be able to buy the CS-R3 in kit form starting with the first quarter of 2015. Prices haven’t yet been specified, but Toyota said they are comparable with other cars in the class.

The CS-R3 won’t be the only rally car Toyota will offer, as a new Yaris warrior is on the way to rally in the 2016 or 2017 seasons, when new regulations are expected to arrive.
