The focus of the campaign will be red-light running, one of the major causes for death and injuries in the cities across the nation. What's worse is that, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 10 percent of red-light runners involved in fatal crashes in 2009 were teenagers.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on the other hand says that teens are involved in three times more fatal crashes that more experienced or older drivers. The statistics show an increase in casualties in the summer days. From May to August, the road death toll among teens doubles, reaching an average of 16 crashes each day (usually, that number is nine crashes each day).
The Department of Transportation found that vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds, with more than 5,000 young drivers being killed on the roads each year.
