With a second generation of the ill-fated smart forfour and an all-new smart fortwo on the horizon in 2014, it seems that the larger, four-passenger model may not reach American shores any time soon.
According to the head of smart, Annette Winkler – who recently had a chat with Automotive News – the new forfour hasn't been homologated for the United States market, implying that the model may be kept mainly for the Europeans.
She also said that both specific US homologation costs and the fact that the Us might not be a big enough market for the car is the reason behind the not-yet-taken decision concerning the smart forfour.
Previewed by the smart fourjoy concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the new forfour will be made in cooperation with Renault and will be based on a stretched version of the upcoming third generation of the fortwo, meaning that it will be a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive city car with four seats – in other words a modern version of the original Volkswagen Beetle.
