Renault is slow-teasing us with the launch of the brand new Twingo city car, bringing out details in very small packages. When we wrote our last story yesterday, we were still waiting on official information regarding this vehicle, despite the fact that it had been shown.
That information came, but still lacks any tangible detail about the proportions or technology fitted. The press release, which you'll be able to find below, tells us that "the brand’s engineers and designers started from a blank sheet of paper and took their inspiration from the legacy left by the original Twingo and the Renault 5".

That's a nice way of saying the new Twingo is different to its predecessors and has rear-wheel drive. But if Renault started from scratch, I guess we should say Daimler provided the paper, pencils and a tutorial book. That's because the new Twingo is actually co-developed by the two companies together with the replacement for the smart.

Since Renault did not provide any powertrain information, we'll just have to tell you what we know already. For starters, the power should come from a 0.9 TCe engine similar to the one in the Clio but tilted 45 degrees to maximize boot space. There
might also be a naturally aspirated version of that engine as well. Some of the cars in our photos have the TCe badge and some don't, a bit like the base Clio 1.2 doesn't.

The styling of the new Twingo is somewhat similar to the old one's facelift at the front. The headlights are rectangular, a bit like the old 5 Turbo, the upper grille is a wide wing-shaped wedge in which the Renault crest sits. Below that, designers have fitted a circular LED daytime running light cluster. The air induction for the engine has been puzzling all of us for the past half hour. It might be that the front lower grille sends air through the underbody of the car to the engine in the back, or the intake could be somewhere we can't see it.

Down the side, the hidden rear door handles are a nice touch, as are the "pop" colors which give a very vibrant look to the car.

We have so many questions about the new Twingo. All all answers and yours will be answered in less then a month, when the car is officially revealed during the Geneva Motor Show.
