New Renault Symbol / Thalia Unveiled

Renault Clio Symbol, also called Thalia on certain markets, is a the 4-door sedan version of Clio and it’s been around and in production since 1999. A facelift came mid-life for the car, following the lines that the Clio II also received with its facelift (new bumpers, split grille, sexier headlights etc.). Than it 2008, they launched what they called a second generation Symbol. Though it had new body panels that no longer looked like the Clio (III at that time), it still used the same old running gear and platform as the 1999 model.

Renault has finally released a new Symbol that we can actually believe is “new”, but the only problem is it’s just the 2012 Dacia Logan with softer edges on the bumpers. It’s not a bad look, actually, but what’s the point of having two almost identical cars?

Just like the Dacia Logan, the Symbol seats up to five people inside and has extra legroom for passengers compared to the previous model.

Powertrains will include the new TCe 90 petrol, a 0.9-liter turbo engine with 90 horsepower, returning 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers, equivalent to 122 g/km of CO2. Just like the Logan, it will aso come with two versions of the 1.5-liter diesel, the dCi 75 and dCi 90 engine.

It will hit the market in 2013, beginning with Turkey, Algeria and Tunisia, according to the official Renault statement. This leads us to believe it might not be built in Romania, on the same line as the Logan.

“New Renault Symbol delivers a level of equipment normally associated with vehicles from the next segment up,” notes Evrim Gouillou, Marketing Project Manager. “Its new design and attractive equipment package are the perfect answer to meet the demands of customers in Renault’s international markets.”
