It seems Renault is now testing many of its new cars in Romania, not just Western Europe. After we saw the 4-door Duster-based pickup there a few weeks ago, even the prototype for the Laguna saloon seems to have taken to Eastern roads.
This heavily camouflaged test vehicle was spotted by Gabriel Dogaru on the A1 highway between Bucuresti and Pitesti. Needless to say, the test engineer isn't too happy with the fact that he's being photographed.
The all-new Laguna is going to be revealed this summer and will play a crucial role, replacing both the old Laguna and the Latitude. This time around, the French aren't going to use technology borrowed from Korean partners Samsung.
Just like the 2015 Espace, it's going to be underpinned by the Renault-Nissan CMF-CD platform. Most of the engines will be downsized. For example, the Laguna will make heavier use of the 1.6-liter block in both TCe petrol and dCi diesel versions.
The 1.6 TCe will be offered with either 160 or 200 PS, while the diesel will have a 130 PS single-turbo setup or a 160 PS twin-turbo one. In all cases, twin-clutch EDC automatic gearboxes will be made available.
Just like the Espace MPV, the R-Link infotainment system will be quite large and arrange vertically rather than horizontally. We also expect a high level of technological advancement, as the headlights will be all-LED, and rear-wheel steering will be optionally available.
Of course, the Laguna 4 will not have an easy job, as the segment for large sedans is packed with competent models, such as the VW Passat, Ford Mondeo and Mazda6. More and more customers are moving to premium models like the Mercedes C-Class or switching to more appealing SUVs.
UPDATE: The prototype was also photographed in the middle of Bucharest, Romania's capital. Seems the Laguna wants to be up to any challenge, including the speed bumps and potholes.
