The Land Rover range of models is undergoing the automotive equivalent of being photocopied at 10% magnification. Following the industry norm, models are becoming bigger, but also lighter, delivering on what customers have been demanding.
The Range Rover Sport will undergo some major changes with the arrival of he next generation. The platform will be changed from the current Discovery-sourced version to an aluminum one shared with its big brother.
From our spyshots, we’ve learned that it will be a bit larger in size, and in a recent video we’ve seen that the front end styling will be Evoqueish. According to AutoExpress magazine, the new Sport will be so large inside that it will be available with a seven-seat optional package. The base pricing of the model will also be increased by about 10%.
The last two sets of seats will be able to fold flat into the trunk, so don't worry about that being compromised.
Several engines will be available, starting off slow with a basic 260 horsepower V6, working its way up to a 300 horsepower version with a second turbo and then to the V8. America's entry-level model will continue to be a naturally aspirated vee-eight while two supercharged versions of that will also be sold. The most powerful will debut in 2015 with 550 horsepower, suspension tweaks and a swifter gearbox.
By using aluminum, Range Rover will save quite a lot of weight. However, you should expect this mighty offroader to become suddenly a pedestrian family wagon. Testing has been going on in all sorts of inhospitable places, including the deserts of Nevada, Dubai and North Africa.
Of course, to keep things nice and light (rumors indicate that it will shed around 400 kg / 882 lbs), the hardcore differentials and underbody protection will be kept as options. By doing so, Land Rover will make a bit of extra money and help the Sport compete with the popular BMW X5.
