The thought of falling to their deaths from a suspension bridge frightens most motorists. Hollywood feeds our fears with scenes in movies ranging from Spider-Man to Godzilla, but the danger is very real, and many people have lost their lives due to excessive speed or adverse road conditions.
A serious accident took place on April 5th, 2015, in Sochi, a city in the Krasnodar Krai region of Russia where the 2014 Winter Olympics were organized. The driver of a white Range Rover Evoque plummeted about six stories from the top of a bridge to a street below it.
CCTV footage shows the Range Rover driver was traveling at high speed on a wet road when he or she hit the railing and jumped over it. Because the accident took place on a Sunday, there were plenty of eyewitnesses on hand to record the aftermath.
The driver miraculously survived a plummet from about 20 meters (66 feet), but the car looks like a total write-off. From the look of it, this is a 3-door Evoque Pure model, worth about €40,000. It would be interesting to find out if the insurance company will cover such a weird-looking crash.
It's been a long time since we last saw crash damage like this. Instead of a destroyed front end, the Evoque is messed up from underneath. All the suspension was torn apart, and some interior trim pieces shot upwards like they would in a mine explosion.
It's a very dangerous scenario that most automakers don't prepare for and could result in crippling spine damage. Fortunately, SUVs are better than most cars in this type of crash because they have longer suspension travel that absorbs damage.
