While we should get to see the Turbo incarnation of the 992 Porsche 911 (only the Carrera S/Cabriolet is available to date) by the end of the year, 2020 is also expected to deliver spicy Neunelfer derivatives. The GT3 is almost a certainty when it comes to next year's debuts and it looks like it will be joined by the new Targa.
As the Porschephiles among you know, Porsche brought back the canvas top for the 991 incarnation of the Targa, with the 996 and the 997 models having used a glass setup that seems more like a huge sunroof rather than resembling the original Targa.
Well, it looks like the engineering toy that is the new roof is here to stay, as showcased by the 992 Targa test cars such as the one at the bottom of the page.
This tester was spotted in Italy, close to Stelvio Pass, which is one of the best driving roads the world has to offer - the tester was seen in a convoy of prototypes, one that also involved the 992 Turbo.
Speaking of the two, the spiciest rumors out there talk about the return of the Turbo Targa badge.
Of course, we'll have to meet the "standard" models first, with this including the base, the S and perhaps the GTS. Who knows? Perhaps the TT moniker will be introduced for the ".2" mid-cycle facelift of the Neunelfer, which is still three to four years away.
As we found out while reviewing the 991.1 Porsche 911 Targa 4S, this body style is a full 88 lbs (40 kg) chunkier than the Cabriolet, while being a full 242 lbs (110 kg) less friendly to the scales than the Coupe. Then again, perhaps Zuffenhausen engineers have made that gap smaller for the newcomer.
And while the 992 is up to 50 kg heavier than the 991.2, it also brings a power boost of 30 hp (at least for the Carrera S).
Since the 992 is also cozier than before, this means the Targa, which can be considered the lifestyle choice of the range, will be able to work in a greater number of driving scenarios.
