New Porsche 911 GT3 Unveiled in Geneva

Never have three little letters meant so much in the automotive industry. Slapping on the "GT3" designation onto the Porsche 911 means so much more than adding sticky tires and sports suspension.

The sixth generation of the GT3 track special actually celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 911, so it's a very special car.

We're used to Porsche moving things a millimeter at a time, but there is no pussyfooting about this time, it's a monster. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter DFI flat-six engine, the same as in the Carrera S. But instead of 400 PS, this now makes 475 PS.

In a world filled with 500+PS supercars, that might not seem like much, but because the 911 GT3 is so light, it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 315 km/h (195 mph).

The new GT3 is a car of many other first: it uses rear wheel steering, is only available with a dual-clutch PDK gearbox and has electrically-assisted power steering. All these elements combine to make it one of the fastest cars Porsche has ever built.

On tests of the Nurburgring test track, it has managed to lap the circuit in "under 7:30". To put that into perspective, the Carrera GT did a 7:28:71, while the Mercedes SLS AMG GT did a 7:30:00.

The price for all this performance is going to be €137,303 (US$178,850 at today’s exchange rate) in Germany when the 911 GT3 goes on sale this August.
