The current 991 generation of the Porsche 911 may be approaching its facelift, but we still haven’t received all the versions of the rear-engined coupe. For instance, we are still waiting for the 911 GT2 and out spy shooters have recently caught the prototype lapping the Nurburgring.
Before we start talking about the test vehicle in the adjacent images, we have to explain that most of the sources regard this as a 911 GT3 RS development car. We beg to differ, as the air intakes on the rear arches are a sign of forced induction. These have always been present on the Turbo, GT2 and GT2 RS models and it wouldn’t make sense to have them on a naturally-aspirated model such as the GT3 RS.
We still have to remember that 911 product manager August Achleitner said the GT2’s future had not been decided when talking to Car and Driver back in January. Nonetheless, that could be a marketing move aimed at making sure current customers spent their money on the present model instead of waiting for the GT2.
We last saw the GT2 prototype back in February and it appears that the prototype hasn’t changed too much meanwhile. The only striking new element is a bit of camo on the roof. Still, we wouldn’t hold our breath for a roof scoop.
As we found out during our 911 Turbo S review, the car is so stable that you almost forget the engine is at the back - we mean this in a good way. Well, the GT2, basically a Turbo with more power and RWD, should change that. By the way, we also mean this in a positive manner.
