New Opel Astra, a Hit in Europe

Last year's release of the new Astra may be a life saving move for German carmaker Opel. Known to be one of the best selling models in Opel's lineup, the Astra, together with its newest generation, keeps on beating record after record.

In early March, Opel said it had received 100,000 orders and was expecting to sell around 180,000 for the first year of sales. A prevision which, truth be told, might be an understatement, given the fact that in the last three months, an extra 50,000 units have hit Opel dealerships. With 150,000 people cued to get the new Astra, the carmaker whose future was in doubt last year has reason for hope once again. Especially because the range is to be completed later this year with new Astra models.

"We are extremely satisfied with our new five-door Astra’s start. Now we are eagerly awaiting this year’s launch of the highest-volume model in the Astra line-up, the Sports Tourer,Alain Visser, Vice President Sales, Marketing & Aftersales for Opel said in a statement.

The new Astra is being offered with a wide choice of engines, including new 1.4- and 1.6l turbocharged petrol units. The entry level Astra is equipped with the 1.4l naturally aspirated engine, some 8 percent more fuel efficient than the one fitted on the former generation Astra.

Diesel engines will include the 1.3-, 1.7- and 2.0l turbocharged powerplants, developing in between 95 and 160 horsepower. The ecoFLEX engine configuration has been released recently, setting, according to Opel, new standards in efficiency (4.1 l/100 km).
