The recently unveiled MINI Convertible made its first appearance in front of a live audience on the floor of the Tokyo Motor Show this week. The car surprised not only with its new color but also due to the models on the stage.
Unfortunately, we don’t have too many pics from the event, but the MINI stand is one of the few that actually has both male and female models on stage. This is a rare sight at any such show, as the floors are usually dominated by beautiful women.

Maybe Tokyo is trying to send out a message about equality or maybe their culture is just drastically different from what we’re used to seeing. Either way, it was a refreshing change of pace.

As for the car, the officials decided to unveil it in the new Caribbean Aqua paint and that was a good call on their behalf. Furthermore, the interior was all white, the one color we’d choose for the leather and trims if we were configuring a drop top.

Compared to its hardtop brother, the convertible uses a textile roof that can be raised and lowered in 18 seconds. You should also know that it will add over 100 kg (220 lbs) to the weight of the car, though, even if you don’t really care about this sort of stuff.

Most of it goes into reinforcing the car’s body and not the actual roof, but it makes little difference overall if you think about it, regarding enjoyment.

It will matter in the performance department as well as fuel consumption figures, as they will definitely not be on par with the numbers returned by the conventional counterpart. That’s because the engines remained the same.

The US market will only get the 136 HP Cooper and the 192 HP Cooper S models at first, while the European (and other markets) will also get a 116 HP Cooper D version from the beginning. More alternatives will be made available further down the line. Deliveries will begin in April 2016.
