New Mercedes C-Class Coupe Launched in Japan, Only Comes with 156 HP 1.6L Turbo

Last month, Mercedes launched the brand new GLC in Japan with four flavors of the 250 4Matic engine. We expected they would do the same with the all-new C-Class Coupe, but instead the Land of the Rising Sun received a 1.6-liter.

That's right; the luxury compact coupe is making its debut in the stomping area of the GT-R with a 1.6-liter engine. It's not the end of the world, as it will still look good and drive reasonably fast, but Infiniti offers so much more in the Q60 coupe.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the Mercedes naming system works, the 1.6-liter turbo engine is available in several models ranging from the A- to the C-Class (and in between). In the case of the C 180 Coupe, the four-cylinder engine produces 156 PS, 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque and will take you to 100 km/h in about 8.5 seconds.

But maybe we shouldn't be so surprised when the much bigger S-Class Coupe is only available as an S400 with a V6 engine.

Despite the unimpressive driving force, Mercedes is asking an arm and a leg for this coupe. Prices in Japan start at 5,470,000 yen and can rise another 7% for the Sport+ model that features different wheels and a red leather interior.

Mercedes has always made great-looking coupes, and the new C-Class model is no exception. Being underpinned by the same platform as the sedan, it measures 4,705mm in length, being 65mm longer than its predecessor. Also, the wheelbase has grown by 80mm.

All models sold in Japan will come in right-hand drive, equipped with a 7-speed automatic gearbox and fitted with the Sport body kit. However, we think the only features that will appeal to Japanese buyers are the automatic gearbox, the styling and the class-leading interior.
