Back in January we were reporting that the Launch Edition of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W222 was severely underestimated when it comes to demand on the Indian market.
So underestimated, in fact, that the S-Class units allocated for the entire country were sold out in a matter of days, making the Germans double check their future strategy and consequently change it.
As we said back then, April was the month when new Mercedes-Benz S-Class was to start being locally assembled from CKD parts (Knocked Down Kits), but it seems that the plans went so well that the luxury sedan has already started manufacturing at the Chakan plant in Pune.
The first model to be locally assembled will be the S 500, which as some of you know is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 that outputs 455 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque – more than enough to offer sports car-like acceleration on top of the luxuriousness found in the interior.
“No other car stands for Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class and we are delighted to manufacture the new S-Class at our state-of-the art production facility in Chakan, Pune. Quality has all along been the strength of Mercedes-Benz India, and the new S 500 production in India is set to take this success story even further.” said Eberhard Kern, managing director and CEO at Mercedes-Benz India.
With a starting price of 1.36 crore, the Mercedes-Benz S 500 will be the most expensive three-pointed star model to be assembled at the plant in Chakan, Pune, the other ones being the C-Class, E-Class, M-Class and GL-Class.
