What started as super-exclusive limited edition of the previous generation G-Class, the 4x4 Squared soon became a household name in the modern G-Wagen lineup.
Mercedes-Benz is currently working on the second-generation of the G-Class 4x4 Squared, with two pre-production prototypes having been recently spotted cold weather testing in the snowiest parts of northern Sweden.

According to the spy photographers who were on the scene, both models sounded more like the G 63 than the more civilian G 500 (G 550 in the U.S.), even though none of the AMG design motifs are present on either off-roader.

Even though some of the camouflage wrap from previous prototypes has actually begun to intensify, we can still see pretty much all of the details of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4x4 Squared prototypes.

The ultra-wide wheel arches and the massive ground clearance are already visible for a mile away, with the off-road wheels hiding a set of big brakes with cross-drilled rotors.

The original 4x4 Squared, which was based on the previous G-Class with a solid axle suspension front and rear, was fitted with an awesome-looking and super-effective portal axle system on both ends of the vehicle, but that will change with the new one.

As most of you know, the current G-Class features an independent front suspension, which has made the car handle much better and safer on the road.

This is why the two pre-production 4x4 Squared prototypes only have a portal axle on the rear, while the front end seems to be using a set of oversized control arms to keep those massive wheels in check.

As before, power is expected to come from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 made by Mercedes-AMG, only this time it should also feature a 48V mild-hybrid system.

The ground clearance seems to be similar to that of its predecessor, which could manage a fording depth of no less than a meter (39.4 inches) and could clear big boulders even better than a Hummer H1.
