Japanese automaker Mazda revealed the MINAGI compact crossover SUV concept at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show in early March, designed to showcase its all-new SKYACTIV technologies and a new design theme, KODO – Soul of Motion. The concept will be shown again at the New York International Auto Show this week.
As expected, the concept will be followed by a production version which, according to Mazda, will be called the Mazda CX-5.
Mazda’s all-new compact crossover SUV will be the first production vehicle to incorporate ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ Mazda’s new design theme that premiered on the Mazda SHINARI concept car last year, along with a full range of breakthrough SKYACTIV technologies, including new-generation engines, transmissions, body and chassis.
Mazda says these technologies combine in a low-weight, highly-safe package. Exterior highlights of the MINAGI include the chromed ‘signature wing’ on the front fascia, a front grille that is slightly angled downwards, while juxtaposing the headlamp housings design to slant upward. The rear fenders project outward to create a wide, SUV-style stance.
Inside, the main black interior color is highlighted by the color red or the rear seatbacks and at the bottom of the door armrests. There is also a ‘black smoked’ coating on the tinted horizontal metal panel positioned along the center of the instrument panel.
The CX-5 will join Mazda’s global line-up in 2012. The “CX” in CX-5 represents Mazda’s line-up of crossover SUV vehicles, which also includes the Mazda CX-7 and Mazda CX-9. The CX-5 will be the compact model in the series.
According to the company, the first time we will get to see the CX-5 will be at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show to be held in Germany in September.
