Sitting down with high-ranking representatives from BMW and talking their latest products is definitely an opportunity you don’t want to miss. At Detroit, the interviews conducted with such officials brought forward new details about the F80/F82 M3/M4.
The guys from Bimmerpost had the chance to ask them a couple of interesting, uncomfortable questions that revealed some enticing details, the most important of which is that the new models will be 10 seconds faster around the Nurburgring than the cars they are replacing. That’s a drastic improvement.

Another interesting detail that caught my eye is the fact that the M division purposely kept the xDrive all-wheel-drive system away from their new products because it would’ve brought too much weight into the equation.

The focus was on weight saving and driving experience when these two cars were being made. That means that using a system that adds 70-80 kilos (155-176 lbs) to the overall weight of the car was out of the question from the get go. Furthermore, it wouldn’t really make sense, just to make the cars faster to 100 km/h (62 mph) because that is really the only advantage AWD brings.

The two new M cars already sounded great from what info we had way before the 2014 NAIAS started. However now, I’m even more excited about them and can’t wait to see if BMW managed to right its wrongs from the last few years, when everybody started calling their cars ‘fat’, ‘overweight’ and claim that the Bavarians lost their touch.
