New Luxury DS 9 Sedan Starts Testing in Europe, Is the Peugeot 508 in Disguise

This dazzling new prototype was spied during testing in Southern Europe. At first glance, it looks nothing like anything on sale today, but of course, we already knew that the development of the DS 9 flagship fastback sedan was underway and recognized it immediately.

Even back when DS was part of the Citroen brand, it had ambitious plans for a full lineup and a flagship. Of course, we now know the DS4 and DS5 weren't a good idea, but way back in 2012 there was a concept called the DS9, which even had the double chevron badges.

The design was shown at the Beijing Auto Show that year and was more of a shooting brake with wide shoulders. Of course, the internet loved the look of the thing, but Citroen never got around to making on. Some of the styling elements for that car have trickled down to this production vehicle, especially the headlights, and we know this because some clear photos have been leaked, and we'll put those ahead of the spyshots in the gallery just so you have a better idea of what's under the camo.

Styling is quite bold here, though not by DS standards. The headlights resemble those of the DS 7 Crossback, and they might even have the same swiveling LEDs for the sake of overcomplication. But if you look past the purple paint and the chrome trim, you will discover this is actually a re-bodied version of the Peugeot 508, the Chinese market long-wheelbase version to be precise.

So it's going to be based on the familiar EMP2 platform, and we can share the 508 L's dimensions for the sake of reference: 4,933 mm in length, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,468 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,895 mm (114 in). Two powertrains are expected to be offered, a normal 1.6 turbo and a plug-in version of that with more power.
