Drivers can often neglect the importance of tires, and that's because a vehicle will work even with the worst of them. For some people, that's more than enough.
Tires are a prime example of a consumable product: you strap them on the wheels and, from the moment the lift lowers the vehicle back on the ground, they start wearing until you finally have to buy new ones. That's probably why some drivers don't see the point in investing in a quality but also more expensive product. In a way, you would be throwing money out the window.

Then there are those who realize that it's just those four tiny contact patches that link their vehicle to the surface it's running on, and the stronger the link, the more likely it is they'll stay in control. Yes, but surely you don't need any special rubber for the unchallenging conditions of day-to-day driving, do you?

Well, the truth is it's better to be prepared and not need it. Yes, any tire can do up to 50 miles an hour (80 kph) on dry asphalt without any issues, but can you be certain that dry asphalt will remain that way on your way back as well? The Chaos Theory says you can't, so why not play it safe?

But then there are those vehicles which, by their very nature, need special tires that will enhance - or at least fully enable - their potential in certain situations. When we hear that, we mostly think about fast cars taking corners at high speeds, but the truth is quality tires are as vital for off-road driving as for any other situation.

With that in mind, Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli has come up with a new tire developed specifically for the new Land Rover Defender. Keeping the Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season name, the bespoke tire is meant to offer both off-road performance and class-leading rolling resistance for improved efficiency and reduced road noise.

The Italian specialist used a "standard" Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season tire - which is in class A for rolling resistance - as a starting point and proceeded to enhance its off-roading performance. As a result, both their structure and their pattern has been modified to enhance grip on mud, wet grass, and snow. Following an extensive testing protocol that saw the new product travel from Italy to England, Sweden, and Spain, the new Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season was deemed ready to be fitted on Land Rover's new Defender.

However, as good as this product might be as an all-rounder, those interested in true performance know that nothing beats a dedicated tire, meaning they might want to invest in another set of wheels and swap them depending on their needs. For the occasional off-roader who spends most of their time on the road, though, the new Pirelli tire should make a palpable difference.
