New Lamborghini's Name Revealed And It's not HyperVeloce, Coming at 2016 Geneva Show

There is an entire list of badly named models across the 100 years plus of car history, but among the most recent ones is one of Lamborghini's most fierce rivals: Ferrari. Or should we say, "The Ferrari"?
Lamborghini is now preparing to launch a new range-topping model and naming such an important car has become something of a conundrum. The name most people thought will be used was "HyperVeloce", but recent reports from the French media claim otherwise.

French outlet TF1 says the Italian hypercar will be called "Centenario", as a tribute to the 100 years since the founder of the company, Ferruccio Lamborghini, was born in 1916. The numbers don't add up? That's because the new car is scheduled for a 2016 release.

This was absolutely expected of Lamborghini: the new car will be a limited edition effort and will bear the LP770-4 suffix. That means the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine will be chuffing out no less than 770 horsepower and will use a four-wheel drive system.

What this means in performance figures is that the Centenario LP770-4 will get through the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in just 2.7 seconds. That is 0.2 seconds faster than the model it's based on, the Aventador LP700-4. The exact top speed value is still a mystery, but it's expected to exceed the 350 km/h (217 mph) of the standard Aventador.

The Lamborghini Centenario LP770-4 will be made in a 20-units limited edition and will come with an asking price of over one million euros ($1.15 million). Initial talks of an extra 10-units run of a spyder version has been dropped and it looks like all we'll get are those 20 coupes. There is no info on the design of the new car, but while some visual tweaks are expected, the Centenario will most certainly not look as radical as the Veneno (pictured here).

Expect the Lamborghini Centenario LP770-4 to reach us next March when the Geneva Motor Show will open its gates.
