The EV is going to be the only version of the new Soul offered to European customers. Imported from the Gwangju plant in Korea, this competent electric model will be in high demand when it reaches the old continent in the early part of 2019.
The 2020 Kia Soul just made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where its bright green paint stood out against the normal gasoline-powered models. Neither these nor the diesel will make it into European showrooms, though Russia and Ukraine could be exceptions.
An early 2019 launch means we're very likely to see the Soul EV at the Geneva Motor Show in March, by which time it could even be on sale. These are the official photos which have been released ahead of that, and they present a new, metallic blue color. Of course, acid green isn't for everybody, but we liked it.
Pricing has not been revealed, obviously, but we do have a crucial piece of information, that two trim levels will be available. The basic Soul EV will have everything you could want. But the Soul EV Designer Collection would provide an upmarket experience with a two-tone paint scheme, gloss-black mirror caps, a 10-speaker Harman-Kardon premium audio system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats upholstered in Sofino artificial leather and all the safety tech.
Horsepower and torque numbers have been announced. Unlike other Korean EVs, there's just one engine making 204 PS and 395 Nm (291 lb-ft) of torque. The battery pack is the same as everywhere else and with 64 kWh on tap, it could go beyond the 400-kilometer mark quite easily.
Kia's press release also claims that the feelings of acceleration and driver enjoyment will be significantly amplified over the old Soul EV. The 2020 model will also be much better at one-pedal driving, as controls on the steering wheel will allow you to change how much regenerative braking is going on. Also, the crossover will have four drive modes, Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Eco+.
