In production since 2008, the Mohave has been redesigned to a great extent for the 2020 model year. Known as the Borrego when Kia sold the mid-size SUV in the United States, the newcomer takes styling inspiration from the Masterpiece concept.
Shown towards the end of March 2019 at the Seoul Motor Show, the Masterpiece is a bit more flamboyant than the series-production model. But looking at the bigger picture, who could say no to four tailpipes and M O H A V E etched across the tailgate? As you can tell from the busy front fascia, there’s no Kia badge at all on the exterior of the off-roader with V6 suck-squeeze-bang-blow.

The tailgate confirms 4WD and the 3.0-liter displacement of the engine, and the latter could be either the Lambda II GDi or a newer version of the engine. Codenamed G6DG, the six-cylinder plant can trace its roots back to the 2010 Beijing Auto Show and it’s good for approximately 300 horsepower.

On the other hand, Kia could be referring to the S-Line CRDi turbo diesel, utilized by the Veracruz and previous generation of the Mohave. The oil-burning V6 is rated at 256 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque between 1,700 and 3,500 rpm. Whatever engine hides under the hood, there’s no denying the automatic transmission will include eight forward gears and a torque converter.

It’s hard to make a case for the Mohave coming back to the U.S. as the Borrego, offering three rows of seats and accommodation for eight occupants. Kia already has the Telluride in this market, also a mid-size SUV with plenty of room and cupholders for family-sized customers’ needs.

The Telluride is produced locally in the U.S., starting at $31,690 excluding destination charge. Available with front- and all-wheel drive, the gasoline V6-engined Telluride is twinned with the Palisade that Hyundai manufactures in South Korea.

It is also worth highlighting that the 2020 Kia Mohave isn’t all-new from the ground up. It’s more or less a heavy improvement over the previous model, and we’re not surprised about this given how few examples of the breed are sold every year.
