Over the years, Jaguar manufactured close to 950,000 examples of the XJ. But on July 5th, production will come to a grinding halt after 51 years. Four platforms later, the full-size sedan will be reinvented from the ground up with the help of the Modular Longitudinal Architecture.
Serving as a replacement for the D7u in the Range Rover, the MLA has been developed for mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. “A source close to the company” told Automotive News Europe that Jaguar will launch the XJ with all-electric propulsion, then introduce “six-cylinder gasoline versions later in the model cycle.”
The internal combustion engine that comes to mind is the Ingenium straight-six in the Range Rover Sport HST, a state-of-the-art powerplant with 400 PS and bundles of torque. Coupled to the ZF 8HP automatic transmission, the Ingenium should be an excellent choice to customers who aren’t prepared to make the switch to an all-electric setup.
Jaguar and Land Rover will manufacture MLA-based vehicles in Solihull, which means that Castle Bromwich will take a step back as far as the XJ is concerned. In addition to the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport will roll out in 2021 on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture.
Plug-in hybrid MLA models will utilize a 13.1-kWh battery for an electric range of 50 kilometers while mild-hybrid MLA models will integrate a belt-driven starter generator for bursts of electric boost. Electric vehicles such as the XJ, by comparison, will feature 90.2 kWh of capacity and a range of “up to 470 kilometers (292 miles)” according to Nick Rogers.
The head of product engineering didn’t touch on the subject of Tesla, which offers a lot more from the dual-motor Model S Long Range. Competition doesn't end there because Porsche, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz will launch plenty of electric models in the coming years.
Head of design Ian Callum, who’s leaving Jaguar for different challenges, doesn’t believe that Jaguar Land Rover would be able to underpin every model on one platform. "It would be mad not to evolve the I-Pace platform,” he said, but then again, don’t forget that JLR is in the middle of a cost-saving process.
