The new version will take much of its look from the CS Concept, first displayed in 2007 and later in April 2008 at the New York International Auto Show. The CS Concept was scrapped later that same year, as it “does not meet the internal requirements for rates of return,” according to CEO Norbert Reithofer, as reported by leftlanenews.
The new 5-Series will also benefit from some technical support developed for the new 7 series.
Thus, it will be fitted with Integral Active Steering, Dynamic Drive, Dynamic Damping Control, Night Vision System, Lane Warning, and cruise control with Stop and go function. For all the gadgets enthusiasts out here, the new 5er will even have a Heads Up Display.
The engines that will propel the new 5er will develop from 180 up to 370 horsepower for the petrol versions and from 180 up to 290 horsepower for diesel versions. All this power will be controlled by either a six speed manual or a six speed Steptronic gearbox, bmwblog.com found out.
Marketed since 1972, the 5-Series has proven to be a very successful model, with the 5 millionth unit exiting the plant in January 2008. The name 5 series comes from being the fifth model in the post V-8 and Isetta eras. Until now, there were five generations of the 5 series, making the 2010 the sixth model.
BMW hopes that the new model will follow its predecesors, both in sales and reliability.
