New Hyundai Lineup Confirmed for 2011

It’s official, the Veloster will replace the old Hyundai Tiburon in 2011. The statement was made by the Hyundai Motor America president and CEO John Krafcik. He also added that replacement cars for the small Elantra sedan, light-sized Accent hatch, a new generation Sonata, which will be named i40 and mid-size Santa Fe SUV, will also emerge the same year.

According to Krafcik, in about 12 months we will have a Veloster on sale which apparently borrows “up to 80 percent” of the concept car’s design. “It might be doors or a unique roof or something with the hatch. But it won’t be like anything out there before in the small car segment,” he said. We will be able to see the production version at the Seoul motor show in April 2010.

If you’re expecting the i30 platform with the 2.0-liter engine or the 2.7-liter V6, you might be a little disappointed. Hyundai’s US boss says that its more likely that the Veloster will feature the new 1.6-liter litre direct-injection GDI four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 103Kw.

“The Tiburon is gone, but it’s a hole that will definitely be filled – and the magic word is Veloster,” he said. “I don’t know what final form it will take, but I expect that if you look at the trends in Europe that kind of swoopy, low-slung hatchback is very appealing to the generational equivalent of people why bought two-door coupes.”
