New Google Maps Version Now Available on CarPlay, There's Good News and Bad News

While Google Maps remains the top navigation app on CarPlay (despite Apple insisting so hard for Apple Maps), there’s one feature that everyone wants but which the search giant has apparently forgot about: support for the dashboard.
Apple unlocked the maps card on the CarPlay dashboard with the release of iOS 13.4, essentially giving users the option to replace Apple Maps with whatever app they like.

But these apps first need to be updated with support for the dashboard, something which everybody expected Google to make happen in Google Maps and Waze in a matter of days.

And yet, the search giant isn’t really in a rush to bring dashboard support to Google Maps despite the company actually working continuously on further polishing the app. So every single update is something that CarPlay users are eagerly waiting for, only to end up being disappointed when they figure out support for the dashboard isn’t there.

This is the case of Google Maps version 5.45 for iPhone and CarPlay and which is now available for download from the App Store. This new update comes without a changelog, as this is something that Google typically does for its app updates unless there’s something big in there, so we can only assume that version 5.45 is all about bug fixes under the hood.

And this is good news anyway, especially as users have come across various problems with Google Maps lately, including the app sometimes failing to announce the navigation instructions that it displays on the screen.

So yes, this new release is both good news and bad news, which means you should still install version 5.45 on your devices even if dashboard support isn’t there. Google has remained completely tight-lipped regarding an ETA for this highly anticipated feature, so waiting is the only game we can play right now.
