New Golf BlueMotion That Does 88.3 MPG Goes on Sale in Britain

Obviously, the way fuel efficiency is measured in Europe differs from the US, but we're pretty sure it's easily understandable that this is one amazingly frugal car. The latest Golf BlueMotion model went on sale in Britain yesterday from the semi-reasonable price of £20,335 (RRP OTR) for the three-door and rise to £20,990 for the five-door, with specification based on that of the standard Golf S trim.

The car is powered by the latest version of the 1.6-liter TDI equipped with Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems. With 110 PS and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal, it should give you plenty of poke.

To make it more economical, engineers fitted it with a six-speed manual gearbox that has longer gears, low rolling resistance tires, better aerodynamics thanks to a reduced ride height, a masked off upper grille, underbody panels to reduce drag and a set of small spoilers behind the C-pillar to improve air flow.

The result is a family hatchback that only requires you feed it one gallon every 88.3 miles. Yes, that's right, 88.3 mpg UK 3.2 l/100km), equivalent to CO2 emissions of 85 g/km. Put that in your exhaust pipe and smoke it!
