New Ford Ka Spotted Testing in Brazil, to Be Launched Before World Cup

While Ford has failed to win over European customers with the rebadged Fiat 500 it now sells as the Ka, the Blue Oval has something new planned. Going back to principles of affordability that made the first generation model so popular, a new Ka is being developed, one which will play a major role in Emerging markets like Brazil and India.

The new Ka has already been shown as a concept and is rapidly approaching the production stage of its life cycle. Based on the old generation Fiesta, this five-door hatch uses thinner sheetmetal and a shrunken platform to fit into the A-segment.

A report from autossegredos.com.br states this test prototype for the Ka III was spotted in Brazil only recently. According to them, stockpiles of the old model are close to being exhausted and Ford's other cheap model, the Fiesta Rocam, will be discontinued next month.

The new five-door hatch would be launched just before the FIFA World Cup (starts Thursday, June 12, ends Sunday, July 13th). A sedan version will also come later, in October, during a local motor show. Two engine choices will be available, a 1-liter with 80 hp and a 1.5-liter, making 111 hp on petrol and 107 hp on ethanol.

Prices are expected to start from R$28,000, making it not only the cheapest Ford in the country but also cheaper than the Fiesta Rocam hatch.

We know the same Ka will also be sold in India, where it will replace the Figo hatch and sedan. But what about the rest of the world and especially Europe?

An official statement from Ford made at the "Go Further" event in Barcelona last year says to expect this city car in "European showrooms in a couple of years", meaning early 2015 is the likely European debut date. Ford has promised that besides making it bigger, they will also fit technology that is usually incorporated in larger cars such as voice control that can be found in Ford’s SYNC and AppLink that offers the possibility to activate apps, play music and more.
