New Ford Focus RS vs. Mustang GT Drift Battle Is Surprising

However, many believe there's one last realm where the Mustang remains king, with the spicy Focus not being able to enter this arena. We are, of course, talking about drifting.

Even the maddest all-wheel-drive contraptions out there, such as the Nissan GT-R, for example, get rear-wheel-drive conversions when entering the sideways world, so the Focus RS couldn't follow the 'Stang down this path, right?

Wrong. Thanks to its clever GKN-supplied AWD, which includes tech wizardry such as torque-vectoring rear diff, the manic hatchback is rather good at delivering delicious slip angles.

We've seen the Focus RS demonstrating its sliding abilities on numerous occasions so far, but the video below brings something new, namely a drift battle involving the RS and a Mustang.

Keep in mind that we're not dealing with the EcoBoost Mustang, which shares its 2.3-liter turbo four with the RS or about the V6 here. Instead, the pony seen wagging its tail in the piece of footage below is the mighty GT, with its 5.0-liter V8.

The shenanigan took place earlier this month at Silverstone, with the most interesting thing about it being its out-of-the-blue nature. To put things bluntly, the Focus RS driver noticed the Mustang GT guy practicing his drifting skills, so he decided to join the party.

P.S.: While the Focus RS admittedly can't drift quite as well as an RWD machine (we're not talking about the action in the clip below here), the kind of AWD donuts it demonstrates in the final part of the video are something that will keep you thinking about it long after the browser page has been closed.
