The first generation HY-KERS system was revealed to the public in 2010. It’s short for hybrid kinetic energy recovery system and its main goal is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions while improving the engine’s overall efficiency and thus lowering fuel consumption.
The new system has been adapted to a mid-engined layout coupled to a V12 which Ferrari says is ‘highly efficient’. It will most likely be present on Ferrari’s Enzo replacement which is due some time next year. Ever stricter emission regulations will force them to adopt this plus other emission reduction techniques.
It achieves its 40% reduction in CO2 emissions and its improved economy by using an electric motor which is coupled to a 7-speed double-clutch system. The new system adds a second electric motor, solely used to power the car’s auxiliary systems. Ferrari could use the batteries as ballast, giving the car an even weight distribution and low center of gravity. The final position of the batteries has yet to be decided.
