The new Toyota Corolla sedan for the European market has just taken the maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP, an important credential for what is essentially a family car. The car scored well in all tests, but perhaps most impressively it measured 94% on Adult Occupant Protection, which is one of the highest result we've seen in the category.
A strong body and 7 SRS airbags fitted as standard are likely the cause for this result. "Multiple-load path structures have been applies to the front and the sides, to minimize cabin deformation in the event of a collision by effectively dispersing impact load. Additionally, pedestrian protection has been improved by adopting numerous energy absorbing components," Toyota Europe explains.
The new Corolla is also fitted with Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats to reduce whiplash injuries during rear end collisions. It's among the few cars that have thus achieved a "Good" rating for rear impact protection.
The sedan is equipped as standard with ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC) and an emergency brake signal function. However, it only achieved 66% for Safety Assist, barely meeting the required 65% imposed by Euro NCAP for any 5-star car.
