BMW Australia announced today that it will be introducing a new, entry-level 3 Series Sedan starting with June 2013. The new model will be known as BMW 316i.
Equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 136 HP and 162 lb-ft (220 Nm) of torque, this will be the cheapest BMW 3 Series available in Australia, starting at AU$50,900 ($53,335 USD, €41,432). With a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 l/100 km (40 mpg) this also claims to be the most fuel efficient vehicle in its class.
According to BMW officials from Australia, being cheaper doesn't mean it will be a de-specced version. The 316i will feature, as standard, 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, multi-function leather steering wheel, 6.5-inch display and rear parking sensors.
If interested, buyers can also go for BMW's four distinct packages: the Sport, Modern, Luxury or M Sport Lines. With this new model, BMW will have a considerable advantage over more expensive alternatives from rival companies like the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
