The fact that Delorean will bring an EV with the same design as the car that made the company famous to the market is nothing new, but the carmaker today announced that the DeLorean Electric Vehicle (DMCEV) will use a composite body made by Epic Electric Vehicles.
The DMCEv, which is set to enter production 2012, will have a lightweight resin infused composite body, with the development promising to offer both high strength and low weight.
The new Delorean chassis means that the car comes with a 200 lbs (90 kg) weight reduction compared to the DMC-12 of the '80s. However, we don’t expect the final vehicle to be so light, as the addition of an electric powertrain will take its toll on the scale.
"The original DeLorean was 30 years ahead of its time in the 1980s so I felt that the composites the new DMCEV uses today should also be well ahead of its time," said Founder of Epic EV Chris Anthony. He added, "We have achieved 200 lbs of reduction in weight with these new bodies through better engineering and that will make for a more advanced DMCEV. The roof crush and side impact strength is greatly improved on these bodies and I think this is a great new attribute for the DMCEV."
