Hitting the road to escape it all will become a staple of 2020, and it will be one of the most cheerful one. Road trips by personal vehicles, overlanding, RV and motorhome rentals and ownership are all going up, as people are trying to regain some sense of normalcy by enjoying a vacation with most borders closed.
For those for whom overlanding is a tad too extreme and packing two weeks’ worth of essentials into their family car a bit too cramped, there’s always the option of going away in an RV or motorhome. With the latest Liner landyachts from Germany-based Concorde, you no longer have to choose between going away in the motorhome and leaving your car at home.
Sure thing, you also have to be loaded, but that’s a different story. At the end of last month, Concorde unveiled the upgraded Liner lineup, which includes highlights 990 GI and 1090 GI. They’re “moderate-sized” landyachts, and we’re using the quotation marks because size is relative with a company that also sells motorhomes it bills rolling “private castles.”
Based on the Mercedes-Benz Atego, these two new models are what retirement looks like when you’re filthy rich. They’re packed with the bare essentials, including a fully-stocked kitchen and full bathroom, a spacious bedroom and a living room, and the “underground” garage, they use only the best in terms of finishes and furnishings, and they offer the best tool in terms of getting away for it all for as long as you like.
Concorde calls them landyachts, and they can definitely put to shame many actual homes that don’t have wheels.
Powered by a 6-cylinder, 7.7-liter engine that produces 299 HP, the new Liner is rear-wheel drive, fitted with air suspension, a battery pack to allow you to go off grid, and every creature comfort you can think of. Access is possible through the side, directly into the living room, where you can lounge on a sofa or a bunch of L-shaped seats. The driver’s seat can also turn to face the rear and thus be used when you have guests coming over.
Next is the open-space kitchen, which, though tiny, is fitted with professional gear. You have a sink and plenty of storage space, 3-burner top with oven, the option to choose a microwave or a dishwasher, a retractable coffee machine, and a fridge / freezer large enough to hold supplies for a couple of weeks.
The bedroom area is separate from the rest of the cabin and comes with a queen-size bed under a canopy of lights, and plenty more storage space, including an actual wardrobe. The bathroom is spa-like, with sink and vanity and something called a “rainforest shower,” which is optional.
This might not sound that impressive on paper, but in practice, it’s an impressive job. Add to these amenities the elegant finishes in premium leather (vanilla) and walnut wood trim, and you get the impression you’ve stepped in an actual condo.
Notable features include separate A/C for the living room and the sleep area, separate underfloor heating, satellite TV and premium audio system (one for the bedroom, one for the driver’s cab), birdview camera system, exterior shower, and the possibility to control and monitor everything off one single touchscreen.
The cherry on the top is, though, the “underground” garage. The smaller model, Liner 990 GI, can easily carry a Smart fortwo, while the larger 1090 GI can fit larger models, like the MINI Cooper and Fiat / Abarth 500. On either model, the tailgate is hydraulically operated, which, in combination with air suspension, allows to easily load and unload the vehicles.
The Liner landyachts are further customizable and can even include an extra bed in the driver’s cab. However, they are meant as “single-family homes” so ideally they can carry two people. Three, if they want a driver and he or she is willing to rough it up.
One such motorhome comes with a price to match, as you probably guessed: Concorde doesn’t go into specifics, but they do say that pricing starts at €350,000, which is roughly $413,660 at today’s exchange rate. These landyachts are shaming your regular house in more ways than one.
