Introduced with great pomp and circumstance for the 2020 model year, the redesigned Silverado HD had to wait until May 2020 for the Single Cab to be added to the lineup. Exclusive to the WT and LT trim levels, the two-door body style comes with the long bed as standard.
Measuring 98.27 inches or almost 250 centimeters in length, the cargo box is shared between the 2500 and 3500 versions of the heavy-duty hauler. Have a guess what hides underhood.

The standard powertrain option – be it two- or four-wheel-drive – is the L8T gasoline V8 with 6.6 liters of displacement. This engine cranks out 401 horsepower (407 PS) at 5,200 rpm and 464 pound-feet (629 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm, and even though it’s a 2020 model, General Motors couldn’t make a business case for the 10-speed automatic transmission. Alas, customers will have to make do with the Hydra-Matic 6Lxx that dates back to 2005.

Though diesel isn’t exactly popular stateside, the L5P turbo diesel Duramax is the engine to have in the Silverado HD. Not only does it produce more horsepower at 445 or 451 PS but torque is rated at 910 pound-feet (1,234 Nm) from 1,600 rpm and you get the 10-speed automatic. You may notice Allison branding but the truth is that’s a lie. A heavy-duty, commercial-grade Allison transmission can be had in medium-duty trucks like the 4500, 5500, and 6500.

Manufactured in Michigan at the Flint plant, the Silverado HD can tow as much as 35,500 pounds (16,103 kilograms) as you can tell from the dually in the photo gallery. Up to 15 camera views are available, and driving aids are also plentiful if you’re prepared to pay extra.

To whom it may concern, General Motors continues to manufacture the 2019 model year Silverado HD for a rather simple reason. To the point, it’s a little less expensive than the 2020 redesign.

Ram does a similar thing to the 1500, although the reason is a little different. Whereas General Motors and Ford have mid-sized pickup trucks (the Colorado, Canyon, and Ranger), the 1500 Classic is all that Ram has to offer as we wait for the Dakota to return by 2022.
