Have you wondered how old the ‘Rado actually is? Wonder no more because the second generation rolled out nine years ago at the 2011 Bangkok Motor Show. Also sold under the Holden brand in Australia and rebadged as the GMC Canyon in the United States, the mid-sized pickup truck will have to wait until 2023 for General Motors to introduce an all-new model featuring the 31XX-2 platform.
Until then, the 2021 and subsequent model years will have to suffice with few changes over the outgoing workhorse. First and foremost, the redesigned front fascia brings the ‘Rado closer to the Silverado 1500 and the heavy-duty series of trucks. The ZR2 benefits from flow-through Chevrolet lettering in addition to the flowtie and blacked-out emblems scattered around the sides and tailgate.

But Chevy isn’t stopping here. New for 2021 are two design packages and a special edition, featuring the RPO codes PCZ, WC3, and WGV. The WT Appearance Package should be the most affordable of the lot because it consists of two things, namely body-color door handles and body-color side mirrors.

The Chrome Appearance Package, as the name implies, treats the mid-sizer to chrome garnish on the grille, mirror caps, handles, beltline molding, and rear bumper, as well as heated and power-adjustable manually folding mirrors. As per the order guide that you can examine at the end of this story, the Custom Special Edition features a body-color grille, rear bumper, door handles, mirrors with driver’s spotter mirror, 18- by 8.5-inch Dark Argent Metallic cast aluminum wheels, and 265/60 by 18-inch blackwall tires of the all-season variety.

The design-focused options don’t end here, though.

Carryovers from the 2020 model year include the Redline Special Edition, Z71 Midnight Edition, ZR2 Midnight Special Edition, ZR2 Dusk Special Edition, and finally, Chevy also offers the ZR2 Bison with off-road goodies from American Expedition Vehicles. As for oily bits, customers are given the choice between three engines.

Codenamed LCV, the 2.5-liter EcoTec is the base powerplant while the LGZ 3.6-liter V6 sweetens the deal with more ponies and torques. Those who buy the ‘Rado for the long haul or towing on a daily basis are better off with the Duramax turbo diesel, a 2.8-liter mill with 181 HP (184 PS) and 369 pound-feet (500 Nm) on deck.
