New Chevy Bolt EV Underlines GM's Commitment to Mobility

It seems like only yesterday we were telling you about how car sharing, EVs, and autonomous cars are set to become really big deals by 2030. Wait. It was yesterday.

Well, today Chevrolet revealed the Bolt EV, a car designed with car sharing in mind. Add to this the $500 million invested by General Motors in Lyft, Uber's uber-rival, and the importance of the mobility industry for automakers becomes obvious.

What's great about the Bolt (Volt, Bolt... really, GM?) is that it's claimed to have an autonomy of over 200 miles and is set to cost under $30,000. It really feels like we're almost there, doesn't it? We're on the verge of getting a truly practical full-electric alternative to conventional propulsion cars.

The Bolt compact crossover looks and acts like it was built for car-sharing programs. It features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, two USB ports within reach of the rear passengers, room for three adults in the back, large doors, and self-sealing tires. There are also cameras that offer a wide-angle view of what's behind the car. The cool thing is that the image is projected onto the rearview mirror.

"It's all about providing convenience to drivers and passengers in busy urban environments," GM’s chief engineer for electric vehicles, Pamela Fletcher, told USA Today. "This really is the first car purposely built for ride sharing."

Chevy currently boasts one of the most electrically-heavy vehicle line-ups in the automotive industry. The same brand that gives us the mighty Corvette also offers the Volt and Chevy Malibu hybrids.

"We make products for a global marketplace, and not everyone out there is ready for an EV," added Fletcher. Well, we're ready. But just so you know, we're keeping the 'Vette.
