New Chevrolet Captiva Launched In Thailand With Seating For Seven People

Five seats come standard in the Captiva LS, but leveling up to the LT will get you seven seats in the case of the 2020 Chevrolet Captiva. Now available to order in Thailand from 999,000 baht ($29,750 at current exchange rates), the multi-purpose vehicle isn’t exactly a Chevrolet under the skin.

The underpinnings come courtesy of the Baojun 530, a nameplate from China produced by the SAIC-Wuling joint venture with General Motors. Already on sale South America, the Captiva is exclusively offered with a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder and a CVT with eight-speed shift control.

110 kW (150 PS; 148 horsepower) will have to suffice, along with adequate torque for a compact-sized vehicle with front-wheel drive. Also known as the MG Hector in India, the all-new Captiva can be optioned with a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, and 360-degree cameras. An electronic brake is also featured, as well as push-button start, keyless entry, LED daytime running lights, and a configurable driver’s display.

It’s obvious that General Motors put a particular focus on the cabin’s design and layout, and the Premier trim level is well-appointed thanks to the leather upholstery on every seat. “Captiva will be especially attractive for customers looking to get into their first SUV, offering expressive style, life-sized space, and smart technology, all wrapped in a smart-value package,” said the general director of sales and marketing in Thailand, Piyanuch Chaturaphat.

Production is handled by the Rayong plant in Thailand where the Trailblazer and Colorado are also manufactured. Even though it’s marketed as an SUV according to Chaturaphat and the local website, there’s no denying the Captiva isn’t anything more than an MPV trying to look like a crossover.

The thing is, such a vehicle is perfect for Thailand because that’s where the money goes in this day and age. Over the past three years, Chevrolet posted a 36 percent increase in sales in this part of the world, mainly thanks to people carriers, crossovers, and more serious sport utility vehicles.
