New BorgWarner Production Site Inaugurated in Chennai, India

The U.S. automotive powertrain components manufacturer BorgWarner recently opened a new production site in Chennai, India.

The site will serve BorgWarner Thermal Systems, an arm of the company that develops thermal management applications designed to improve engine cooling, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions. The 65,000 square foot site is based in a high tech business park and will host manufacturing, engineering, sales and administrative departments. The project has also been engineered to allow future expansions.

"In India, growing demand for mobility and adoption of global emissions standards is driving growth for BorgWarner's advanced technologies," said Dan CasaSanta, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Thermal Systems. "With our new facility, BorgWarner will have the ability to expand existing product lines and introduce new technologies and products."

The new building follows the sustainable development principle, with over 30 percent of the grounds around it being reserved for green spaces and shaded with trees and plants watered with recycled waste water. In addition to that, multiple water- and energy-saving systems are used throughout the building. The “eco” facility is currently seeking silver certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, a set of environmental protection standards established by the U.S. Green Building Council.

BorgWarner Thermal Systems’s Indian arm produces viscous fans and fan drives, with its customer portfolio including companies like Tata Motors, Tata Cummins, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra and others.

BorgWarner recently announced the opening of a new technical center in Shanghai, China. The facility will be used for manufacturing powertrain components in the country and is expected to become the company’s largest technical center.
